Choosing The Perfect Cake Stand With Flour and Fold
When it comes to designing cakes, you can often get swept away in the beauty and elegance of a design and the cake stand often gets overlooked. Lets flip that on its head, and realise that the best way to elevate your design is by picking a perfect stand to compliment it.
I’m Jess from Flour and Fold, a cake designer based in Oxfordshire who specialises in contemporary, romantic wedding cakes for The Cotswolds and beyond. I’ve been in the industry since 2019, starting with celebration cakes and navigating my way through the postal brownie market, before settling on wedding and event cakes as my main passion.
I mainly take inspiration from the natural world, and all things around me. I love incorporating textural elements into my designs, as well as getting creative bringing unique ideas to life using spacers and separators from Prop Options. I like to push the boundaries and not only create a beautifully tasting cake, but a visually beautiful one too.
Choosing the cake stand shouldn’t be an afterthought in the design process. I like to experiment with different types of stand in the sketching process, so that I have an imagined visual of the finished product. This also helps to show my clients what to expect, and gives me a blueprint to work off when I’m actually in the kitchen.
I look at the style of cake I’m creating, then consider my collection of Prop Options stands to see which products will complement the design – if I’m going for elegant, I opt for something tall and sleek such as The Stiletto, and for more rustic and natural designs, I lean towards The Hairpin or Scandinavian Birch Stand. If a design is floral heavy, o the couple have toxic flowers in their palette, I’ll recommend the Floral Crown and base a design on this.
5 Top Tips For Choosing Your Perfect Cake Stand
- Use a stand in-keeping with your design. You want the stand to be an extension of the cake, not a distraction.
- Consider the location - Is it a rustic barn, or a high end hotel? Different stands suit different venues.
- Hire fees – Is this an additional fee or included in your quote?
- Do you take a deposit to cover damages/non returns.
- Is your choice suitable for the size/weight of the cake?
