Monochrome & Movement with Cobi & Coco
I jumped at the opportunity when Kelly from D’licious Mag asked me if I would be interested in a collaboration with Prop Options and D’licious Mag, to design a wedding cake tutorial for the May’s Wedding Cake edition.The collaboration was to feature cakes in the magazine showcasing Prop Options items from cake designers around the world, using their award-winning products from cake stands to cake separators.
I looked at 2024 wedding cake trends for inspiration, I wanted to create a modern contemporary design that’s visually striking yet achievable to make for all skill levels, from beginners to experience bakers looking for some new ideas.
One wedding cake trend that excited me was Wedding Dress inspired Cakes. Looking at the 2024 bridal catwalks for inspiration, picking up on the key trends coming up in the new bridal collections.
Don’t mistake this as a wedding cake looking like a dress, mimicking the bodice on the top tier and the skirt on the bottom tier. But instead picking up on elements of the dress, for example a large bow to replicate the bow on your dress or ruffles to mimic the volume of your dress.
It was a joy picking items from Prop Options collection, I was like a kid in a candy store for bakers. I selected the 6" Reeded Separator, 6" Acrylic Spacer, 8" Fillable Clear Tier and the 16" Fillable Clear Tier. I wanted to use all the items together to create a grand maximalise cake, highlighting an alternative option to using dummy tiers to achieve a tall impactful cake that many couples desire.
The key bridal trends I picked up on was Pearl Embellishments, Peekaboo Panels and Ruffles. I designed the cake incorporating Prop Options separators and clear tiers that became integral to the final cake design.
Pearl embellishments are the epitome of elegant modern design, seen on wedding dresses and accessories. The reeded separator was perfect for this trend as it guarantees a neat straight line with the pearls sitting neatly in the curve of the reed design. I added pearls in two different sizes along the reed with small wafer paper flowers and leaves.
Peek-a-boo panels to create the illusion of bare skin. The 8" fillable clear tier was great to show this Peek-a-boo trend. I added a single stem flower inside this tier to give depth to the 3D floral applique design on the outside. This clear tier was perfect to add pipping and embellishment, like a peek-a-boo mesh panel on a wedding dress.
Ruffles & Weightless Volume. I made an ethereal wafer paper ruffle base that sat on top of the 16" clear tier, this clear base helped give this overall design a contemporary modern look. Its high sheen helped with the play of light and shadow showcasing this wedding cake design – Monochrome & Movement.

I’m Serena, the designer and maker behind Cobi & Coco. I see baking as my creative outlet, an art form allowing me to work with my hands. Having grown up surrounded by chefs in my family, I frequently experimented in the kitchen and fell in love with baking.
I love working within the wedding industry, being part of a couple’s special day, and to be able to play a role in making a couple’s dream wedding day come true. It’s rewarding and allows me to explore my creativity with every cake I design. I do not make the same cake twice as I believe every couple is unique and their wedding cake should reflect this. This motivates me to be artistically adventurous to try new designs and techniques.
