What We Build

A plinth is a simple object done precisely, or it is a wobble

Most plinths look like a white box. The ones that work are the ones where somebody worked out the load path, the wall thickness and the way the top is fixed before anything was cut. That is the part we do.

A plinth for a 100kg stone sculpture

Private collection, London

A collector came to us with a stone sculpture weighing around 100kg and nowhere suitable to put it. The brief was short. 45cm square, 60cm high, white, and strong enough that nobody has to think about it again.

The weight is the whole job. A sculpture on a stone base is a point load, not a spread one, so the weight arrives through a small area rather than across the top. A plinth that would hold 100kg spread across the lid will fail under the same 100kg concentrated in the middle of it.

So it is built as a braced box rather than a hollow one, with internal supports carrying the load from the top panel down through the side walls to the floor, and the top doubled where the base sits. The finish is gloss white laminate on a timber carcass, with the panels cut, edged and matched before assembly so the sheen runs the same way on every face.

  • Size 450 x 450 x 600mm
  • Load 100kg, point loaded through a stone base
  • Construction Braced timber carcass, internal supports, doubled top
  • Finish Gloss white laminate, edged all round
  • Delivery Crated, to a London address

Specifying It Well

Four things that decide the price

What goes on top, and what it weighs

The single most useful thing you can tell us. A 5kg vase and a 100kg bronze are different objects to engineer for, and so are 100kg spread across the lid and 100kg standing on a 200mm base. If you do not know the weight, tell us what the piece is and we will work from that.

Height and footprint

Eye level for a standing viewer is usually somewhere between 90cm and 120cm from floor to the top of the piece, so the plinth height follows the sculpture rather than the other way round. Tell us both and we will suggest a height.

Finish

Gloss, matt, sprayed colour, laminate, veneer, solid timber, powder coated metal or acrylic. Gloss looks sharp and shows every knock. Matt is more forgiving in a busy space. We will tell you which we would use and why.

Where it lives

A plinth in a hall gets knocked, one in a gallery gets moved, one outdoors needs different materials entirely. Levelling feet, hidden castors, a removable top for cabling and a weighted base are all easy to add at build and awkward to add later.

Materials

Built from whatever the job actually needs

Laminate on timber

The usual answer for an indoor plinth that has to look sharp and take real weight. Gloss or matt, edged all round, and far harder wearing than paint on MDF, which chips at every corner.

Sprayed timber and MDF

For colour matching to a brand or an interior. Any RAL, Pantone or paint reference, in matt, satin or gloss, with the corners filled and flatted so the joints disappear.

Metal fabrication

Welded steel or aluminium, powder coated or polished, for heavy loads, slim walls or a plinth that will be moved repeatedly. Adjustable levelling feet are worth having on any uneven floor.

Acrylic and glass

Clear, frosted or colour, flame polished on the visible edges, for display where the plinth should disappear and the piece should not. Suited to lighter objects and lit displays.

Who It Is For

Collectors, galleries, retailers and venues

Plinths and display pieces go out of here to private collections, galleries, exhibition builders, luxury retail, hotels and caterers, alongside work for Anya Hindmarch, bet365, GAIL's Bakery, Smart Group and Moving Venue. There is no minimum order, so a single plinth for one sculpture is as welcome as a set of thirty for a show, and the per unit cost drops considerably across a run.

Questions

Answered plainly

Can you make a plinth to hold a heavy sculpture?

Yes. We have recently built one for a 100kg stone sculpture. The important thing is not the total weight but how it arrives: a piece standing on a small stone base concentrates the load in the middle of the top panel, so the plinth is braced internally and the top doubled under the base. Tell us the weight and the size of the base and we will engineer it for that.

What sizes do you make plinths in?

Any. They are cut to your dimensions rather than picked from a range, so the height and footprint follow the piece going on top. If you are not sure what height you need, tell us the height of the sculpture and we will suggest one.

Will you make just one plinth?

Yes. There is no minimum order. A single plinth for one piece is normal work here. If you need a matching set later, the specification is kept on file so the second order matches the first rather than being close to it.

How much does a bespoke plinth cost?

It depends on size, finish and load, and honestly on how the weight is carried, because that is where the engineering sits. Send the dimensions, the finish you want and what is going on top, and we will come back with a fixed price rather than a range.

Can you match a specific colour or finish?

Yes. Any RAL or Pantone reference in matt, satin or gloss, laminate in a given decor code, veneer, solid timber or powder coated metal. If you are matching an existing piece, send a photograph and we will specify the nearest finish and say how close it will be.

Can a plinth be moved or taken apart?

Yes. Hidden castors, levelling feet, removable tops and demountable flat pack constructions are all possible, and all far easier designed in than retrofitted. Say at the enquiry stage if the plinth will travel, be stored or need to go through a narrow door.

How long does a bespoke plinth take?

Two to three weeks is typical from approved drawing to delivery. If you have a fixed date, an exhibition opening or a delivery slot, say so when you enquire and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable before you commit.

Do you deliver plinths?

Yes, crated, anywhere in the UK, and we will quote the carriage separately at cost. Larger plinths go by pallet. Tell us the postcode and whether there is parking and a lift, because both change the answer.
